British Wallpaper and Fabric Designer Lorna Syson
Wallpaper can change a room and space in so many ways, that’s why I have developed and grown my collection of bespoke wallpaper and fabric designs over the last 10 years. All of my designs feature handmade and bespoke patterns on the UK’s indigenous flora and fauna from my own photography images of Great British Birds and Floral Designs.
Contemporary Wallpaper Designs – Modern and Bespoke with Handmade Patterns
Some of my designs are classic but the majority are contemporary wallpaper designs, but my aspiration was always to be a British wallpaper designer, to be inspired by the British countryside and to print in the UK. Global Stockists – John Lewis and Independent Stores UK and Europe
Over 10 years on from the beginnings of my business in 2009, I feel like I can truly call myself an established British designer. I’m also a global supplier for John Lewis and independent stores for my fabric and Greetings Cards and Stationery. My bespoke UK wallpaper designs have grown so much over the last few years that I now have 25 different designs in my collection. I’ve found that the Robin Red Breast is a popular choice throughout the year as well as Christmas cards and wrapping paper.
All my wallpaper designs can be ordered as fabric for any bespoke interior projects too. All of my designs are inspired by indigenous British wildlife, and within my wallpaper collection I have bird inspired designer wallpaper and floral inspired designer wallpaper that will suit different tastes and interior decorating needs.
British Bird Wallpaper UK Designer Patterns
I know that a lot of my customers, like me, are keen bird watchers and particularly enjoy seeing British birds in UK gardens and countryside. Each of my bird wallpaper designs are inspired by British birds that you could see on a walk around your neighbourhood or looking out at the bird feeder when doing the washing up! I love seeing all the British birds that come to the garden, when we lived in London and now also out in the countryside
I would describe most of my bird designer wallpaper as contemporary wallpaper designs, as they are ‘of the moment’ and I always bring in things that are inspiring me at that point in time, both in terms of wildlife, design techniques and colour palettes. One of my bird design wallpapers that I would describe as more classic is my Goldcrest design.
Bird Wallpaper Designs – Hygge Scandi Living
This bird wallpaper in grey, beige and brown hues features goldcrest birds and foliage.
It was inspired by the chirp of tiny British Goldcrests dancing delicately between the needles of pine trees. It is a soft print and exudes a dainty grace, which is perfect when you want to create a country cottage feel with your interiors. It is also great for a ‘scandi living’ themed room but also provides a very cosy ‘hygge’ design to your room decor.
Blue Bird Great TitWallpaper Designs
This is one of my oldest but still most popular wallpaper designs – Juneberry and Bird. The pops of bright yellow and bold blue, made it very contemporary at the time using an array of colours, but it is still very on trend now using Panatone’s colour of the year – classic blue.
As a child these beautiful Great Tits nestled outside my bedroom window. Integral to British hedgerows, I fondly remember growing up next to these colourful birds. This design means a lot to me and is also a really versatile print, perfect for children’s nurseries, bedrooms, lounges and feature walls.
Here is my contemporary Juneberry and Bird wallpaper being used in a UK interior design project by Emma Whyte Interiors. This is her kitchen in the Isle of Skye which was featured in ‘Coast’ Magazine.
I have been working on an incredible project with Emma Whyte and we joined forces to breathe new life into old furniture under our new brand @sysonwhytedesign.
Please follow the new account on Instagram and I hope you enjoy the new upcycled furniture project that will be unveiled soon through Oxfordshire artweeks!
Floral Designer Wallpaper UK British Creations
When I’m not adding British birds to my designs, then I am definitely drawing inspiration from British wildflowers. Again, with my floral designer wallpaper I have some more classic prints and some that are contemporary wallpaper designs.
Wallpaper Designs – Bees, Floral and Birds
Broom and Bee dusk is one of my classic wallpaper designs. The neutral tones mean that it is perfect for a whole room or a feature wall, but you can add your own accessories that enhance your room interior colour scheme. I used this wallpaper in my own Kitchen design. I loved how the neutral greys worked really well with the white cabinet fronts and grey tiles (which I did myself)
This bee wallpaper shows yellow bees on a grey background searching for nectar in the gathering dusk. It was inspired by my honeymoon hideaway, Dandelion Glamping, deep in rural Leicestershire and evokes memories of warm May days spent celebrating the perfect marriage of British flora and fauna.
Contemporary Floral Wallpaper Designs for Feature Walls
My Arla designer wallpaper is one of the most special in the collection. Not only does it have a contemporary floral design that comes in three colourways – blue, grey and pink, it was also inspired by the British flower gypsophila, used on my wedding day.
When it was launched in 2018 it was chosen as a trend featured by Top Drawer in 2019. This was a very proud moment for me so I always have fond memories of this design, and it established me as a British wallpaper designer. It’s probably the most abstract of my floral designs, it’s less obvious what it is, which I love, it would create a great back drop for a feature wall!.
The three colours look fabulous together, especially when mixed across all my interior and fabric ranges!
Bespoke Designer Wallpaper UK RSPB Birds
Of course I have to choose one of my own bespoke wallpaper designs first! My recent collaboration with the RSPB meant that I got to try out lots of different colours for the two final designs – blossom and bird in grey and navy blue and hummingbird in teal and mint. The designs are all part of my RSPB collection, 10% of the sales goes directly to the charity to support the fantastic work they do!
It was fun being able to experiment with more contemporary colours like teal, mint and grey for these wallpaper designs. I’m choosing blossom and bird grey as my favourite right now. It works so well in a clean, neutral living space and adds a modern twist. The blossom pattern is subtle so will go with most things and the pop of delicate pink gives the design and the room more interest without being too distracting.
Here you can see that the monochrome furniture and accessories mixed with the contemporary wallpaper creates a real fusion of classic and modern interiors.
There are lots of British wallpaper designers that I admire, my favourites would have to be Sian Zeng, Designers Guild, William Morris, Cole and Son, Osborne and Little, House of Hackney, and last but not least Timorous Beasties. I love seeing designs that are so different from mine, seeing other British wallpaper designers influences which makes them create something you’ve never thought of!
British Birds and Flowers Wallpaper – Fabric Designs
A selection of indigenous Great Britain trees, flowers and fauna choose from the following designs: Buds and Butterflies, Bluebells, Hydrangea, Gypsophila (Arla) Cherry Blossom, Buddleia and Chrysanthemum, which are available in wallpaper, fabric, lampshades, greeting cards, gift wrap and handmade cushions.
