Small Business Saturday: Why Supporting Independent British Businesses Matters More Than Ever

From 10 Downing Street to my little design studio in South Oxfordshire, Small Business Saturday has always been a campaign close to my heart.

When I started Lorna Syson in 2009, I knew I wanted to create a business that celebrated my love of British wildlife, nature-inspired design and beautiful products. What I didn’t fully appreciate at the time was just how important the community of small businesses around me would become.

Running an independent creative business is an incredible experience, but it also comes with challenges. That’s why campaigns like Small Business Saturday UK are so important, reminding people that behind every small business is a real person with a story, a passion and an enormous amount of determination.

And this is a campaign I have been lucky enough to be personally involved with over the years, including a rather memorable trip to 10 Downing Street!

My Small Business Saturday Journey – Including 10 Downing Street!

For a couple of years, I actively supported the Small Business Saturday campaign, helping champion independent businesses and encourage people to shop small.

One of my most memorable experiences was joining one of the campaign’s famous bus tours, which even included a visit to 10 Downing Street to support the campaign.

It was a fantastic opportunity to be part of something bigger than my own business, meeting other passionate entrepreneurs and helping to raise awareness of the incredible variety of small businesses across the UK.

Standing outside one of the most recognisable addresses in Britain, supporting a campaign dedicated to people like me, was certainly not something I had imagined when I first started designing patterns!

What I loved most about being involved was the sense of community. Although we all ran very different businesses, we shared many of the same experiences: the excitement of a new order, the challenges of juggling everything ourselves and the determination to keep creating something we believed in.

That feeling of connection is something I still value today.

What Is Small Business Saturday UK?

Small Business Saturday is a nationwide campaign that celebrates and supports the UK’s small and independent businesses.

Taking place on the first Saturday in December each year, the campaign encourages shoppers to support small businesses, whether that’s visiting an independent high street shop, discovering a local maker, booking a service or ordering from a British designer online.

In 2026, Small Business Saturday falls on Saturday 5 December.

Although the campaign focuses on one particular day, its message is important throughout the year.

Small businesses are a huge part of what makes our towns, villages and communities interesting. They bring creativity, personality, individuality and specialist knowledge that you simply don’t always find with larger retailers.

Why Shopping Small Makes Such a Difference

When you buy from a small independent business, you’re doing far more than purchasing a product.

You’re supporting someone’s creativity, helping them continue doing something they love and contributing to the wider network of businesses they work with.

At Lorna Syson, for example, my designs begin with my own photographs, sketches and observations of the natural world. They are developed into wallpaper, fabrics, cushions, lampshades, greeting cards and wrapping paper.

I also work with British manufacturers to bring many of these products to life.

My fabrics are printed here in the UK, as is my wallpaper, and my ceramic candle vessels are hand-decorated in Stoke-on-Trent.

This means that when you buy a Lorna Syson product, you’re not just supporting my independent design business. You’re also helping to support the skilled people and specialist manufacturers involved in producing it.

And I think that’s something worth celebrating.

From London to South Oxfordshire – How My Small Business Has Changed

When I launched Lorna Syson in 2009, I was a young designer with a passion for surface pattern and illustration.

Over the years, my business has taken me to trade shows across the UK and internationally, including Top Drawer in London, Maison & Objet in Paris and even a trade show in New York.

I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with wonderful organisations, including the RSPB, work with independent retailers and see my designs become part of people’s homes.

For seven years, I was based at Cockpit Arts in southeast London, surrounded by an inspiring community of makers and designers.

Today, things look rather different.

I’m now based in the South Oxfordshire countryside, working from my own studio, with two young children and a business that has evolved alongside family life.

I’ve also recently brought my stock and order fulfilment back in-house, meaning that when you place an order, I’m much more directly involved in getting it ready to send to you.

It’s a very different way of working from those early London studio days, but my passion for design and British manufacturing remains exactly the same.

Why Independent Design Matters

One of the things I love most about shopping from independent designers is finding something a little different.

Rather than following every trend, independent makers often create products inspired by their own experiences, surroundings and personal interests.

For me, that inspiration has always come from nature.

My Bluebell wallpaper was inspired by visits to an ancient bluebell woodland in Leicestershire, while my Buddleia designs were influenced by the plants and butterflies I noticed during my London commutes.

Other designs have grown from childhood memories, family holidays, walks with my dogs and the flowers and birds I spot in everyday life.

These personal stories are what make independent design special.

When you choose a wallpaper, fabric or greeting card from a small designer, you’re often buying something with a genuine story behind it.

And I think that makes it all the more meaningful.

Five Simple Ways to Support Small Businesses This Small Business Saturday

You don’t necessarily need to spend money to make a difference to an independent business.

Here are five ways you can show your support:

  1. Shop independently. Choose a gift, greeting card, home accessory or something special from a small British business.
  2. Share their work. A recommendation on Instagram, Facebook or to a friend can introduce a business to a completely new audience.
  3. Leave a review. Positive reviews help small businesses build trust and become more visible online.
  4. Sign up to their newsletters. Email subscribers are incredibly valuable to small businesses, helping us stay connected without relying entirely on social media algorithms.
  5. Recommend your favourites. Word of mouth is still one of the most powerful ways to help an independent business grow.

And remember, supporting small businesses isn’t just for Christmas. Those little decisions throughout the year really do add up.

Small Business Saturday arrives at the perfect time to think about Christmas shopping.

A Thank You From One Small Business Owner

Having been involved with Small Business Saturday for several years, and even having the opportunity to support the campaign at 10 Downing Street, I’ve seen how powerful it can be when small businesses come together.

But ultimately, the most important people in any small business story are the customers.

Every order, kind message, recommendation and returning customer has helped me continue doing what I love since 2009.

The business has changed enormously over those years, but I’m still the same person who gets excited when someone chooses one of my designs for their home or sends one of my greeting cards to someone they love.

So this Small Business Saturday, I’d encourage you to discover a new independent shop, support a local maker or revisit a small business you’ve loved for years.

Because when you shop small, you’re helping big dreams continue.

Thank you for supporting Lorna Syson and the wonderful community of independent British businesses.
