Personalised Gifts, Pet Portraits and Bespoke Wedding Stationery by Lorna Syson
There’s something really special about creating a design that’s completely personal to someone. Whether it’s an illustration of a much-loved pet, bespoke wedding stationery or a greeting card featuring a special age, I love being able to make something that feels truly individual.
When I started Lorna Syson in 2009, my business grew from my love of drawing, illustration, colour and pattern. Over the years, I’ve developed collections of nature-inspired wallpaper, fabrics, home accessories and stationery, but I’ve also enjoyed working on more personal projects.
Commissions give me the opportunity to create something a little different, often inspired by the people, animals and stories that mean the most to my customers.
From personalised pet portraits to wedding stationery and made-to-order greeting cards, here are some of the ways I’ve used my illustration skills to create designs with a personal touch.

Bespoke Pet Portraits – Celebrating Our Four-Legged Friends
Anyone who knows me will know how much I love dogs!
Animals have always played a big part in my life and in my designs, so creating illustrated pet portraits feels like a natural extension of my work.
I’ve always loved capturing the little details that make an animal recognisable. It might be the shape of their ears, their distinctive markings, the way they sit or that particular expression that their owner knows so well.
A pet portrait isn’t just a picture of an animal. It celebrates their personality and the special relationship they share with their family.
How My Personalised Pet Portraits Work
I create my pet portraits from photographs supplied by the customer.
Using my illustration style, I work from the photographs to capture the animal’s distinctive features and personality.
Rather than producing a traditional painted portrait, my work has a contemporary illustrative feel, using shape, colour and carefully observed details.
This makes each portrait personal while still reflecting the distinctive style of Lorna Syson.
Whether it’s a dog, cat or another much-loved companion, the aim is to create something that immediately makes its owner smile.
A Thoughtful Gift for Pet Lovers
Personalised pet portraits make wonderful gifts for birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries or simply as a surprise for someone who adores their animal.
They can also be a lovely way to remember a pet who is no longer with us.
Having loved and lost pets myself, I understand how much they become part of the family and how meaningful it can be to have a lasting reminder of them.
A personalised illustration can capture happy memories and become something to treasure for years.
You can explore my pet portrait illustrations through the Lorna Syson website and my Etsy shop.
Bespoke Wedding Stationery – Making Your Special Day Personal
Another area of illustration I’ve enjoyed working on is bespoke wedding stationery.
Weddings are such personal occasions, and I love the idea of creating stationery that reflects the couple rather than simply following a standard template.
From the colours and flowers to the location and little details that make the day special, there are so many opportunities to create something individual.
My background in textile design and illustration lends itself beautifully to wedding stationery, particularly when couples want to include botanical elements, wildlife, floral illustrations or meaningful personal details.

Creating Wedding Stationery With Personality
A bespoke wedding stationery project can begin with a theme, colour palette or something that has particular meaning to the couple.
It might be inspired by a favourite flower, the countryside, a wedding venue or a shared interest.
I particularly enjoy exploring how illustrations and patterns can work together to create a cohesive design.
The aim is to produce stationery that feels personal to the couple and sets the tone for their celebration.
It’s also lovely to think that the finished pieces may become keepsakes, reminding the couple of such an important day.
Why Choose an Independent Designer for Wedding Stationery?
Working with an independent illustrator offers something different from choosing a mass-produced design.
Rather than selecting from hundreds of identical templates, a bespoke commission provides the opportunity to discuss ideas and develop something more individual.
I think that’s particularly appealing for couples who love design, nature and thoughtful details.
My previous wedding stationery projects are part of the wider story of Lorna Syson and the different ways I’ve used my illustration skills over the years.

Personalised Greeting Cards – Something Special for Every Age
Not every personalised design needs to be a large commission.
Sometimes it’s the smaller details that make a gift feel really thoughtful.
That’s why I’ve introduced personalised number greeting cards, allowing customers to choose a special age or number to be incorporated into one of my designs.
I love the idea of taking an existing illustration and making it more meaningful for the person receiving it.
Rather than choosing a generic birthday card, you can select something that feels a little more individual.

Made-to-Order Number Birthday Cards
My personalised greeting cards are particularly lovely for milestone birthdays, but they can also be used for other special ages.
Whether you’re celebrating a child’s birthday, an 18th, 30th, 40th, 50th or another milestone, a personalised number makes the card feel as though it was created especially for the recipient.
One of the designs available is my Bluebell Floral Greeting Card, inspired by the beautiful bluebell woodlands that have influenced my textile and illustration work.
I love how these cards combine my existing nature-inspired illustrations with a more personal touch.
And because they’re made to order, they offer something a little different from picking up a standard card on the high street.
Why Personalised Cards Make Lovely Keepsakes
I’ve always loved sending and receiving cards.
In a world where so much communication happens digitally, there’s something really lovely about receiving a handwritten message through the post.
A card can become a keepsake, particularly when it marks an important birthday or celebration.
Adding a personalised number makes it feel even more special.
It’s a simple idea, but one that combines illustration, thoughtful gifting and the joy of celebrating someone.
What Makes a Lorna Syson Commission Different?
Whether I’m creating a pet portrait, working on a bespoke illustration or developing a personalised greeting card, the starting point is always the same: paying attention to the details.
My designs begin with observation, drawing and an interest in the things that make a subject distinctive.
For my wallpaper and fabric collections, that might mean studying the shape of a bird’s wings or the structure of a flower.
For a pet portrait, it’s the markings and personality that make an animal instantly recognisable.
For wedding stationery, it’s understanding the personal details that make a couple’s celebration unique.
And for personalised greeting cards, it’s finding a way to bring an individual element into one of my existing illustrations.
Although the finished products can be very different, they all come from the same love of illustration and design.
Supporting an Independent British Illustrator
When you commission an independent designer, you’re supporting much more than the finished product.
You’re supporting the time spent developing an idea, the experience behind the illustration and the creativity that makes each piece distinctive.
I’ve been running Lorna Syson since 2009, and during that time I’ve worked on everything from small greeting card illustrations to wallpaper collections and large-scale textile installations.
Today, I work from my studio in South Oxfordshire, continuing to develop my nature-inspired collections alongside personalised design projects.
It’s this variety that I’ve always loved about running my own creative business.
No two projects are quite the same, and there’s always the opportunity to explore something new.
