Willow Tit: The Inspiration Behind My British Bird Design
My Willow Tit design celebrates a small British woodland bird, with soft colouring and a character that lends itself beautifully to illustration.
When creating a bird pattern, I want to capture more than its markings. The rounded shape, tilt of the head and position on a branch all help give the finished illustration personality.
Here, I’m sharing how I developed the Willow Tit pattern, the decisions behind its repeating design and how you can bring it into your home.
Why the Willow Tit?
There is something appealing about making a quieter bird the focus of a design. Its subtle colouring offers a different starting point from the brighter birds we often recognise in garden-inspired patterns.
For my Willow Tit illustration, I focused on the bird’s rounded shape and distinctive markings. I wanted to simplify the detail while keeping enough character for the bird to feel recognisable.
That balance runs through my nature-inspired work: looking closely at wildlife, then deciding which details to carry into the finished drawing.
The result is a pattern that brings a little of the woodland indoors.

From Bird Illustration to Repeating Pattern
Drawing the bird is only one part of creating a surface pattern. The next challenge is arranging the illustrations so they work together across a larger area.
I begin with the overall shape, then develop the details that give the bird its character. Fine marks need careful consideration: something that looks lovely enlarged on a screen can disappear when printed at a smaller size.
Once the illustrations are ready, I work on the repeat. This means arranging the elements so the pattern continues across the surface without an obvious join.
Spacing is an important part of that process. Too close together and the design can feel crowded; too far apart and it can lose its rhythm. I adjust the arrangement until the birds feel balanced within the pattern.
I also consider how the artwork will look on different products. A lampshade shows a smaller section of a design, while curtains introduce folds and wallpaper reveals the repeat across a much larger area.
Checking the artwork at different sizes helps me assess how clearly the birds read and how the pattern flows.
The Willow Tit Colour Palette
The Willow Tit palette draws on soft greys, buff shades and woodland neutrals.
These quieter colours give the design a gentle presence and offer several starting points for decorating. You might pick out a pale shade for the surrounding walls or introduce more depth through darker furniture and accessories.
When putting a scheme together, I would consider:
- Warm off-white paint for a soft backdrop.
- Natural wood for warmth and texture.
- Plain linen or cotton alongside the illustrated pattern.
- Muted green accessories to continue the connection with nature.
The best combination will depend on the colourway you choose and the light in your room. Rather than matching everything exactly, try repeating one or two colours across the space.
How to Use Willow Tit in Your Home
A bird pattern can become the starting point for a room or a smaller detail within an existing scheme.
Wallpaper gives you space to enjoy the full repeat. Fabric introduces movement through curtains, blinds or cushions, while a lampshade offers a way to add an illustrated detail to a favourite corner.
You don’t need to use the same pattern everywhere. A Willow Tit piece can sit alongside plain fabrics, natural materials and colours drawn from the design.
If you enjoy combining patterns, look for a shared colour between them and vary their scale. A smaller bird motif can work alongside a more generous botanical pattern, with plain surfaces giving both room to breathe.
Why I Recommend Ordering a Sample
Screens are useful for exploring designs, but they cannot show exactly how a colour or material will look in your home.
A sample lets you compare the pattern with your paint, flooring, furniture and existing textiles. Look at it in daylight and again under the lighting you use in the evening.
For wallpaper, hold the sample against the wall you are considering. For fabric, place it beside the other materials in your scheme.
