Christmas Gift Guide 2026: Thoughtful Gifts from a Small British Business
Looking for something a little different this Christmas? From beautiful British wildlife-inspired gifts to colourful stationery and home accessories, shopping with small British businesses is a wonderful way to find something special while supporting independent makers and designers.
Christmas is one of my favourite times of year, not just because I love giving presents, but because it’s an opportunity to discover some of the incredible independent businesses we have here in the UK.
As someone who has run my own design business since 2009, I know just how much every order means to a small business owner.
When you shop with an independent designer, you’re not just buying a product. You’re supporting their creativity, the people who help make their products and the future of their business.
So, this year, I wanted to put together a Christmas gift guide featuring some of my favourite products from Lorna Syson, alongside a few thoughts about why shopping small can make such a big difference.
Why Shop With Small British Businesses This Christmas?
It’s easy to get caught up in the convenience of large online retailers, especially when Christmas shopping lists seem to get longer every year.
But I think there’s something lovely about finding a gift from an independent business.
Small businesses often offer products you won’t find everywhere else, with personal stories, original designs and thoughtful details that make them feel more individual.
When you purchase from a small British business, you could be supporting a whole network of people, from designers and illustrators to manufacturers, printers, packaging suppliers and independent retailers.
At Lorna Syson, for example, I work with British manufacturers to bring many of my designs to life.
My fabrics and wallpaper are printed here in the UK, and my ceramic candle vessels are hand decorated in Stoke-on-Trent.
So when you choose one of my products, you’re also helping support the specialist skills and businesses involved in making it.
And that is something I feel incredibly proud of.
Christmas Gifts for Nature Lovers
If you know someone who loves birds, flowers, gardening or the British countryside, my collections are full of designs inspired by the natural world.
Nature has always been at the heart of my work.
From watching blue tits hopping through ivy to discovering beautiful bluebell woodlands, my designs begin with photographs, sketches and memories of places I’ve visited.
These illustrations are then developed into products for the home and everyday life.

Wildlife-Inspired Cushions
A beautiful cushion can be a lovely gift for someone who enjoys making their home feel welcoming and colourful.
My cushion designs feature British birds, flowers and foliage, with patterns inspired by everything from delicate wrens to woodland plants.
They’re a thoughtful choice for someone who enjoys interiors and wants to introduce a little nature into their home.
Nature-Inspired Lampshades
For someone who loves decorating, a patterned lampshade can completely transform a room.
My lampshades feature many of the same nature-inspired designs as my wallpaper and fabric collections, making them lovely statement pieces.
They’re particularly suitable for someone who enjoys colourful interiors and isn’t afraid to introduce pattern into their home.
Gift idea: If you know someone is redecorating, a lampshade featuring their favourite bird or flower could be a wonderfully personal present.
Christmas Gifts for Stationery Lovers
I love stationery, and I think it’s one of those things that can make even everyday tasks feel a little more enjoyable.
My collection includes colourful greeting cards, wrapping paper, gift tags and undated planners, all featuring my original illustrations.
Undated Weekly Desk Planners
If you’re buying for someone who loves making lists, staying organised or planning their week, an undated desk planner makes a really useful Christmas gift.
Unlike traditional dated diaries, my planners can be started at any point in the year.
There’s no need to wait until January, and you don’t have to worry about wasting pages if you miss a week.
They’re ideal for home offices, busy family life, students and anyone who loves a good to-do list.

Beautiful Greeting Cards
Sometimes the smallest gifts are the most thoughtful.
My greeting cards feature illustrations inspired by British wildlife, flowers, dogs, cats and other animals.
They’re lovely to have ready for birthdays, thank-you messages and special occasions throughout the year.
You could even put together a little stationery bundle with a selection of cards and a planner.
It’s a practical gift that can be enjoyed long after Christmas.
Christmas Gifts for Pet Lovers
If there’s one thing I know, it’s how much people love their pets!
Dogs and other animals have always been a huge part of my life, and they’ve inspired many of my illustrations.
Personalised Pet Portraits
For someone who absolutely adores their dog, cat or another much-loved animal, a personalised pet portrait can be a really meaningful gift.
My illustrated pet portraits are created from customer photographs, capturing the distinctive markings and character that make each animal special.
They make wonderful presents for pet owners and can also be a thoughtful way to remember a much-loved pet.
Because these are personalised illustrations, I recommend enquiring well before Christmas to allow time for the artwork to be created.

Animal-Themed Greeting Cards and Gifts
If you’re looking for something smaller, my animal-inspired stationery is another lovely option.
From playful dogs to beautiful British birds, these designs are perfect for anyone who loves animals.
Christmas Gifts for People Who Love Their Home
If you’re buying for someone who loves interior design, colourful patterns or beautifully made home accessories, there are plenty of options within my collections.
Ceramic Candles – A Beautiful Gift That Can Be Reused
My Winter Woodland ceramic candle is one of my favourite gifts for the festive season.
The design features British woodland wildlife, including a robin, wren and blue tit, surrounded by winter berries, leaves and pinecones.
The fine bone china vessel is hand decorated in Stoke-on-Trent and finished with a gold rim.
Inside is a plant-based wax candle with a rich, warming fragrance featuring frankincense, myrrh, amber, cedar and other beautiful notes.
With an approximate burn time of 60 hours, it’s a gift that can be enjoyed throughout the winter.
And once the candle has finished, the ceramic vessel can be cleaned and reused, making it something to keep rather than throw away.
I love gifts that continue to be useful long after their original purpose has finished.

Fabric and Wallpaper for Creative Projects
If you know someone who enjoys sewing, interiors or upcycling furniture, my British-printed fabrics could be a lovely choice.
My designs are printed on 100% cotton and feature everything from floral patterns to British birds and foliage.
They can be used for a variety of creative projects, depending on the fabric’s suitability.
For someone planning to redecorate, wallpaper and fabric samples are also a lovely way to explore different designs and colours before committing to a larger project.
Don’t Forget the Christmas Wrapping Paper!
One of my favourite parts of Christmas is wrapping presents.
I love choosing beautiful paper, matching gift tags and adding those little finishing touches that make a present feel special.
My Christmas wrapping paper features original illustrations inspired by wildlife and the festive season.
I’ve always believed that the outside of a gift should feel just as thoughtful as what’s inside.
And because my wrapping paper is designed to be beautiful in its own right, it’s also lovely for creative projects, paper crafts and other uses.
If you’re buying several gifts, choosing matching wrapping paper and greeting cards can create a really lovely coordinated look under the Christmas tree.
How Does Shopping Small Actually Support British Businesses?
When you buy from an independent business, the impact can go much further than you might imagine.
1. You’re Supporting Real People
Behind every small business is someone making decisions, developing products, managing orders and working hard to keep their business going.
For me, every order represents someone choosing a design I’ve created, and that’s something I never take for granted.
2. You’re Helping Support British Manufacturing
Many independent businesses work with other small businesses to produce their products.
By choosing British-made gifts, you can help support manufacturers, printers, craftspeople and the specialist skills involved in making them.
3. You’re Encouraging Original Design
Independent designers often create products that are different from those found in larger high street shops.
Supporting them helps encourage creativity, originality and a more varied retail landscape.
4. You’re Helping Small Businesses Grow
Every sale contributes towards the costs of running a business, developing new products and continuing to create.
For a small business, even a relatively modest order can make a meaningful difference.
5. You’re Keeping Independent Businesses Visible
Recommendations, reviews and social media shares help small businesses reach new customers.
And with so many businesses competing for attention online, that support can be incredibly valuable.
Five Ways to Support a Small Business Without Spending Money
I also wanted to mention that supporting small businesses doesn’t always have to involve making a purchase.
There are plenty of simple things you can do that make a difference.
- Share a social media post. It might introduce the business to someone who has never heard of it before.
- Leave a review. A few kind words can help build trust with potential customers.
- Recommend a business to a friend. Word of mouth is still incredibly powerful.
- Sign up for a newsletter. It’s a great way to stay connected and hear about new collections.
- Engage with their content. A comment or share can help an independent business reach a wider audience.
These small gestures really do mean a lot.
Small Business Saturday – A Reminder to Shop Independently
Small Business Saturday takes place on 5 December 2026, making it the perfect opportunity to think about where we’re spending our money in the run-up to Christmas.
It’s a campaign particularly close to my heart.
I was involved with Small Business Saturday for a couple of years and even had the opportunity to visit 10 Downing Street while supporting the campaign through one of its bus tours.
It was a wonderful experience and a reminder of just how important small businesses are to communities across the UK.
You can read more about my Small Business Saturday experience in my separate blog post.
Although the campaign focuses on one day, I think its message is relevant throughout the year.
Choosing to shop independently, whether online or on your local high street, helps support the businesses that bring creativity, individuality and character to our communities.
Thank You for Supporting Lorna Syson
I’ve been running Lorna Syson since 2009, and over the years my business has changed enormously.
From exhibiting at international trade shows to working from my studio in South Oxfordshire, it’s been quite a journey.
Today, with two young children and a business that has evolved alongside family life, I’m more grateful than ever for the people who continue to support my work.
Whether you’ve bought wallpaper, ordered a greeting card, chosen a candle as a gift or simply shared one of my posts, you’ve helped me continue doing something I love.
So this Christmas, I’d encourage you to explore the wonderful variety of small British businesses out there.
You might discover a new favourite designer, find a gift that’s completely different from anything on the high street or make someone’s Christmas extra special.
And remember, when you shop small, you’re helping someone’s big dream continue.
Thank you for supporting my independent British design business.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas!
